Each Twitch tax form reports one kind of income: royalties on a 1099-MISC, services on a 1099-NEC.
Many streamers get both forms in the same year, though some get only one. Twitch does not say which of your subs, Bits and ad revenue counts as royalties. You can download each form from your Creator Dashboard once you authorize Amazon Tax Central.

The numbers in Twitch’s tax process
- Jan. 31
- is the date Twitch says it postmarks your paper 1099s, or emails you if you agreed to e-delivery.
- 30%
- is the most Twitch may withhold by default if your tax interview is missing or has expired.
- 180 days
- after earnings become payable, you forfeit them month by month if Twitch still has no W-9 or W-8.
Is your Twitch tax info complete in Amazon Tax Central?
Every Twitch payee takes the tax interview, and Twitch’s streamer agreement makes your payouts depend on it.
US persons give Form W-9
US persons, including resident aliens, give Twitch a W-9, even when they live abroad.
Non-US persons give a W-8 or Form 8233
If you are not a US person, you give Twitch a W-8 form instead, usually Form W-8BEN. Some give Form 8233. Twitch may then withhold US tax from certain payments.
Choose individual or business to match who Twitch pays
Pick individual/sole proprietor on the W-9 if Twitch pays you in your own name. You can use your SSN, your ITIN or, as a sole proprietor, your EIN. A disregarded single-member LLC goes under your name too. If Twitch pays a corporation you own, such as an S corp, the corporation gives its own W-9 and EIN.
Each interview Twitch asks for is current
Twitch has separate Royalty Tax Interview and Service Tax Interview forms, so check each one it asks you to complete. An expired interview brings the same risk as a missing one: default withholding may apply.
Streamer tax write-offs can shrink your tips deduction, because it stops at your profit.
For a self-employed streamer, the limit is the channel’s profit figured before the tips deduction itself. Gear, software and other Twitch tax write-offs lower that profit, and the limit falls with it.
Costs of $4,000
$5,000
Profit of $8,000 covers every tip, so all $5,000 is deducted.
Costs of $9,000
$3,000
Profit falls to $3,000, so $2,000 of the tips cannot be deducted.
Costs of $12,000
$0
The channel breaks even, so none of the tips can be deducted.
IRC 224(c) sets the limit, and Treasury’s regulations apply it to the self-employed in section 1.224-1(e). Profit in each row is the $12,000 taken in, less costs. The tips are well under the $25,000 cap, and the example assumes modified AGI below $150,000 ($300,000 joint), where the phase-out starts. Self-employment tax is figured on the profit before this deduction, so the deduction never lowers it. The example assumes the tips came by card, so a processor’s 1099-K included them.
A Twitch 1099 form covers only what Twitch pays you.
Donations through PayPal or Stripe, such as those sent with Streamlabs, never pass through Twitch. The thresholds below are for payments made in 2026.
| Through Twitch | Outside Twitch | |
|---|---|---|
| Form | 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC or both | Form 1099-K |
| Filed by | Twitch Interactive, Inc. | PayPal Or Stripe, for card donations |
| Threshold | $10 of royalties Or $2,000 of service income | Over $20,000 and over 200 payments Federal test. Card payments at any amount, and apps may report less. |
| Taxable with no form |
A donation sent as friends and family stays off a 1099-K, but it is still income. For 2025 payments, the service income line was $600.
Where streamers lose money on their Twitch taxes.
Waiting for a form mailed to an old address
If you have moved since onboarding, Twitch still mails paper forms to your old address. Download them from your Creator Dashboard instead, or file from your own payout history. If you need more time, Valim files a free Form 4868 extension, or Form 7004 for a business. Any tax owed is still due on the original date.
Treating ‘royalty’ as a different kind of income
Your Twitch 1099-MISC labels part of your pay as royalties. Twitch’s streamer agreement, though, says it intends to treat everything it pays you as payment for services. The Schedule E instructions send royalties earned by a self-employed artist or writer to Schedule C, so both forms generally belong there.
Deducting tips that no 1099 includes
For 2025, tips are deductible only if a 1099’s total includes them, backed by a tip log or similar records. From 2026 the form must list tips separately, and Twitch has not said whether its forms will. If PayPal donations fall below the 1099-K threshold and reach no form, they may not qualify.
Stopping at the forms Twitch sends
Clips you post to TikTok can earn Creator Rewards, and TikTok’s own pages name no tax form for them. Report that income from your payout records, alongside your Twitch income on Schedule C.

Twitch tax questions.
Do Twitch streamers have to pay taxes?
Yes, Twitch streamers pay tax on subs, Bits, ad revenue and donations, with or without a form. If you stream regularly to make money, it is a business, and you report it on Schedule C. You owe income tax and self-employment tax on its profit. A channel must file once its net earnings from self-employment reach $400, even with no other income. Brand deals and Patreon memberships belong on the same return.
Will Twitch send me a 1099, and which form?
Yes, Twitch sends a 1099-MISC once royalties reach $10 and a 1099-NEC once service income reaches $2,000, for payments made in 2026. A Twitch 1099-NEC for 2025 payments used the old $600 line. Many streamers get both forms, and Twitch has not published which of subs, Bits and ads it treats as royalties. Non-US creators get Form 1042-S from Twitch instead, by March 15.
How do I get my 1099 from Twitch?
Twitch says it mails paper forms to the address you gave at onboarding, postmarked by January 31. If you agreed to e-delivery, Twitch emails you by January 31 instead. Electronic copies of your Twitch tax documents are in your Creator Dashboard: open Insights, then Channel Analytics, View My Payouts and View Tax Forms. There you authorize Amazon Tax Central and download each form, one at a time.
Are donations to streamers taxable?
Donations to streamers are generally taxable income, because a donation prompted by your stream is not a tax-free gift. In the Duberstein case, the Supreme Court held that a payment made in return for services is not a gift. Donations through PayPal or Streamlabs are on neither Twitch form, and may not be on a Form 1099-K either. They are taxable all the same.
Do Bits and subs count as tips for the no tax on tips deduction?
Twitch subscriptions very likely do not count as qualified tips, and no rule yet says whether Bits do. Under Treasury’s final rules, a payment required to see content, such as an OnlyFans pay-per-view post, is payment for services. A sub buys perks at a set price, so the viewer does not choose the amount. Viewers buy Bits from Twitch, and Twitch pays you 1 cent per Bit cheered. Money a viewer chooses to send during a free stream can be a qualified tip, even when chat highlights it. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created the deduction for 2025 through 2028, and Treasury’s list of tipped occupations includes streamers.
