Creator Rewards and TikTok Shop profit are taxable, so TikTok taxes can be due with or without a 1099.

TikTok pays Creator Rewards through PayPal on the 15th of each month, once your balance reaches $50. Its program terms make you responsible for every tax on those rewards. Viewers’ LIVE gifts reach you only as Diamonds, one of the factors TikTok weighs when it sets the rewards it pays you.

What TikTok reports and withholds

January 31
is the date by which TikTok Shop sends a qualifying US seller its 1099-K.
24%
can be withheld from TikTok Shop payouts without a valid W-9 or TIN, once the year’s sales pass the 1099-K line.
30%
is the usual withholding on rewards from US engagement for a creator who is not a US person.

Which TikTok tax forms will you get?

The 1099 you get from TikTok, if any, depends on which part of TikTok pays you. Before TikTok pays you anything as a creator, you enter your tax details in your Wallet, under Tax information.

  1. Creator Rewards and LIVE rewards

TikTok’s tax pages do not say which form reports Creator Rewards or the rewards it pays on LIVE gifts. You may get a 1099-MISC or a 1099-NEC for them.

  2. TikTok Shop sales

A US seller gets a Form 1099-K, with a copy to the IRS, once the year’s sales pass $20,000 across more than 200 transactions. You can also download yours in Seller Center, under Finances, then Tax.

  3. TikTok Shop affiliate commissions

The seller whose products you promote sets your commission and owes it to you, and Hyperwallet pays it out. TikTok’s creator terms say TikTok is not responsible for reporting these commissions. They leave any reporting to you, the seller or the payment provider.

TikTok Shop taxes are figured on your profit, after refunds, fees and the cost of goods.

Your 1099-K shows what buyers paid, shipping included, before any refunds or fees come out. On Schedule C, you report that gross first and take each cost off it.

A seller’s 1099-K shows $50,000. Buyers got $5,000 back in refunds, TikTok’s fees came to $6,000, and the goods and shipping cost $19,000.

Tax on the 1099-K total

$7,065

All $50,000 is taxed, as if every dollar were profit.

Refunds and fees taken out

$5,511

Only the $39,000 left after refunds and fees is taxed.

Cost of goods taken out too

$2,826

Only the $20,000 profit is taxed, the figure your Schedule C should show.

Each row is self-employment tax only: 15.3% of 92.35% of the amount, as Schedule SE figures it. Income tax comes on top at your own bracket, and it also falls as the profit does. The amounts are round figures for illustration, and imply no TikTok fee rate.

What changes for a creator outside the US?

If you are not a US person, TikTok treats only your rewards from US engagement as subject to US tax. It reports them once they show in your account, even before payout.

TikTok’s answers for creators outside the US speak of citizens, but the test is US person status. A green card holder, or someone who meets the substantial presence test, is generally a resident alien. A resident alien gives TikTok a W-9 and is taxed like a citizen.

What do TikTok creators most often get wrong at tax time?

  • Matching the 1099-K to your deposits

A TikTok Shop 1099-K counts each sale in the month the buyer paid, and the money settles in your wallet later. So a sale paid in late December can appear on this year’s form but reach you in January. Check the form against your order history instead.

  • Treating LIVE gifts as tips

The tips deduction covers cash tips that fans choose to pay you. After a LIVE gift, the reward you get is one that TikTok sets and pays. So your LIVE rewards may not count as qualified tips.

  • Paying nothing until you file

A viral month can bring a large reward payout, and TikTok generally takes no tax out of it once your W-9 is on file. The IRS usually expects the tax on it during the year, in quarterly estimated payments on Form 1040-ES. Each missed payment can draw a penalty of its own.

Your TikTok payouts and Shop reports become returns a licensed CPA signs.

Valim’s CPAs prepare the federal and state returns of TikTok creators and TikTok Shop sellers, including their Creator Rewards and 1099-K sales.

  • We report your Creator Rewards, LIVE rewards and affiliate commissions from your payout records, whatever forms arrive.
  • We match your TikTok Shop 1099-K to your bookkeeper’s figures or Seller Center reports, so only your profit is taxed.
  • We set quarterly estimated payments that keep pace with your TikTok income.
  • We model the tax on your TikTok profit as a sole proprietor and as an S corp, before you elect.
  • We answer any IRS or state notice on a return we prepared, such as a question about your TikTok Shop 1099-K, within your fee.

TikTok tax questions.

Do you have to pay taxes on TikTok income?

Yes: Creator Rewards, LIVE rewards, TikTok Shop sales and affiliate commissions all count as income. If you post regularly, mainly to make money, the IRS treats it as a business (the test is continuity and regularity). A sole proprietor or single-member LLC reports it on Schedule C. At $400 of net earnings from self-employment, you must file, and self-employment tax is due on all of those earnings. If YouTube also pays you, Google reports its share on a 1099-MISC, a form TikTok names for none of its rewards.

How much tax do you pay on TikTok?

On $20,000 of TikTok profit, self-employment tax comes to about $2,826: 15.3% on 92.35% of the profit, or about 14.1%. Federal income tax then applies at your own bracket, and you can deduct half of the $2,826 in figuring it. A deduction of up to 20% of qualified business income may lower your income tax further.

Will I get a 1099 from TikTok?

You will if you sell on TikTok Shop and your sales top $20,000 over more than 200 transactions in a year. That form is a 1099-K, found in Seller Center under Finances, then Tax. TikTok’s pages name no form for a US creator’s Creator Rewards or LIVE rewards, while creators outside the US get Form 1042-S instead. A payer files a 1099-NEC, or most kinds of 1099-MISC, once its 2026 payments to you reach $2,000, so you may receive one. Other platforms send their own forms: Twitch, for example, reports royalty income on a 1099-MISC and service income on a 1099-NEC.

How are TikTok Creator Rewards and TikTok Shop income taxed?

For most creators, TikTok Creator Rewards and TikTok Shop income are both self-employment income, taxed on the profit left after business costs. Most TikTok creators pay their own tax on this income, through quarterly estimated payments on Form 1040-ES or when they file. Creator Rewards, and what TikTok pays you for LIVE gifts, count in full as business income. TikTok Shop income starts from your gross sales, the unadjusted figure a 1099-K shows, less refunds, fees and the cost of goods sold. Affiliate commissions are income as well, whether or not a form reports them.

What happens if I don’t file my TikTok taxes?

The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of your unpaid tax for each month or part of a month the return is late, up to 25%. If the tax also goes unpaid, a failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% a month applies too. In a month when both apply, the filing penalty drops by 0.5%, so the two together cost 5% a month, plus interest. For a 2026 return over 60 days late, the filing penalty is at least $535, or the full tax due if that is less. If you need more time, Form 4868 extends the filing deadline, but any tax you owe is still due by the original date.
