PayPal 1099-K: when PayPal, Venmo, Cash App and Stripe send one

A PayPal 1099-K comes once you pass $20,000 and 200 goods and services payments in a year. Here is when Venmo, Cash App and Stripe send one too.

PayPal, Venmo, Cash App and Stripe each send a Form 1099-K once you receive more than $20,000 in over 200 payments in a year. Only payments for goods and services count, and both tests must be met. The figures are set by law, with no inflation adjustment.

Payments from friends and family are not counted and are not income. Some states set lower figures, and every dollar you earn is taxable whether or not a form arrives.

Who sends a 1099-K, app by app?

All four apply the same federal test, but each counts different payments.

  • PayPal reports payments the sender marked as goods and services, even when the sender chose that label by mistake. Find the form in the PayPal Statements & Tax Center.
  • Venmo reports goods and services payments, and every payment to a Venmo business profile is tagged as a purchase automatically. Find it under Settings, then Tax Documents.
  • Cash App sends a 1099-K only for a business account, not a personal one. A pilot launched in September 2026 lets some sole proprietors earn on a personal account under the same threshold.
  • Stripe files the form itself for direct Stripe users. If you are paid through a platform's Stripe Express account, the platform files your form instead. Stripe posts it in the Dashboard's Documents section.

Each app files its own form for the payments it settled, so a creator paid through all four can receive four forms.

What is the 1099-K threshold for PayPal payments received in 2026?

For 2026, PayPal must file a 1099-K when your goods and services payments exceed $20,000 and number more than 200. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed on July 4, 2025, restored that test.

The $600 threshold you may have read about never took effect. Several states set lower figures, and PayPal and Venmo report to them.

  • Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia: $600 in a year, at any number of payments.
  • Illinois: over $1,000 in at least four payments.

PayPal uses your primary address on December 31 to decide which state's figure applies.

How much do you have to make for PayPal to send a 1099?

You have to receive more than $20,000 in more than 200 goods and services payments in one year. The five states above set lower figures. Below that, PayPal sends no 1099-K.

There is one exception. For 2025, PayPal said it and Venmo would file a 1099-K for any customer under backup withholding, whatever the total. That happens when your taxpayer ID is missing or wrong, and 24% of payments is held back.

Do PayPal payments get reported to the IRS?

Yes, once you pass the threshold. PayPal sends you a 1099-K and files a copy of it with the IRS.

Personal payments, such as a friend paying you back for dinner, are not reported and are not income. The sender picks the label, so a friend who picks goods and services by mistake adds that payment to your form.

Do I have to report 1099-K income?

Yes, and you must report income that no 1099-K shows. The IRS says you must report income "whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K."

Here is what a CPA knows that the forms do not say. The threshold applies per app, not across them. A creator taking $15,000 through each of four apps earns $60,000 and may get no 1099-K at all.

When a form does arrive, it shows gross payments before fees, refunds and shipping. Stripe says it cannot change the amounts on its forms. Report your sole proprietor income on Schedule C from your own records, then deduct the fees and refunds. If a wrong form is never corrected, the IRS says to report its amount in the space at the top of Schedule 1.

When do the forms arrive?

DateWhat happens
December 31, 2026Your year's payments close
February 1, 20272026 forms due to you
April 15, 2027Your 2026 return is due

The law sets January 31 for the form, and a deadline that falls on a weekend moves to the next business day. Venmo and PayPal post forms in the app and send an email when they are ready.

What should you do now?

  1. Add your taxpayer ID in each app before year end, so no 24% backup withholding applies.
  2. Ask friends and family to pay you as a personal payment, and customers as goods and services.
  3. Keep business and personal money in separate accounts, such as a Cash App business account for customers.
  4. Total each app's income yourself, since a Form 1099-K may never come.
  5. If a form is wrong, ask the app for a corrected one. The IRS cannot correct it.
