Crypto tax · Robinhood

Crypto sales in your Robinhood tax documents are on Form 1099-DA, inside one consolidated 1099.

For 2025 crypto sales, Robinhood reported only your gross proceeds to the IRS. Your own copy adds the basis, and the gain or loss, wherever Robinhood knows what you paid. Any basis Robinhood lacks must come from your records.

Robinhood’s dates for tax year 2025

6:59 PM
Eastern time (11:59 PM UTC) on December 31 was Robinhood’s cut-off for putting a crypto trade on its 2025 forms.
Jan. 14
was the 2026 deadline to add a cost basis in the app for transferred crypto sold in 2025.
Feb. 17
was Robinhood’s 2026 date for your consolidated 1099 to be ready.

The Robinhood crypto tax form you get depends on what you sold or earned.

The Tax center in the app lists all Robinhood tax documents available to you.

  1. You sold crypto

Form 1099-DA reports the crypto sales in your Robinhood Crypto account, starting with 2025. It replaces Form 1099-B, which Robinhood used for crypto sales before.

  2. You sold stocks, ETFs or options

Form 1099-B reports your sales of stocks, ETFs and options. Your Robinhood stock tax documents and your crypto forms come in one PDF. The PDF is from Robinhood Markets, Inc. and holds the 1099s for Robinhood Securities, Robinhood Crypto, Robinhood Derivatives and Robinhood Money.

  3. You earned crypto rewards or referral stock

For 2025, Robinhood put crypto rewards on Form 1099-MISC once they reached $600, and treated referral stock the same way. The law puts the 1099-MISC line at $2,000 for payments made from January 1, 2026. Rewards below the line bring no form, but they are still income.

  4. You had no sales and little income

For 2025, Robinhood sent no Form 1099 if you sold no stocks, crypto, ETFs or options. That held only while your dividends and interest stayed under $10 and your miscellaneous income under $600.

Some forms come outside the PDF: Form 1099-R for a Robinhood IRA, Form 1099-C for canceled debt and Form 1042-S for foreign account holders.

A missing cost basis raises your Robinhood crypto taxes.

A single filer sells $30,000 of crypto on Robinhood. Coins bought there for $15,000 sell for $20,000. Coins transferred in, which cost $8,000 elsewhere, sell for $10,000.

Proceeds taken as gain

$4,500

All $30,000 is taxed, including the $23,000 the coins cost.

Robinhood’s basis only

$2,250

The coins bought on Robinhood show a $5,000 gain, and the transferred coins count as $10,000 of gain.

Every lot with its basis

$1,050

The $8,000 paid elsewhere cuts the transferred coins’ gain to $2,000, for $7,000 in all.

Each coin was held over a year, so every gain is long-term. This filer’s other taxable income is above $49,450, and the gain keeps the total within $545,500. In 2026, that puts the whole gain in a single filer’s 15% long-term bracket. The three results are 15% of $30,000, $15,000 and $7,000. The figures exclude state tax and the net investment income tax.

Your Robinhood crypto 1099 treats transferred coins differently from coins bought there.

A transfer moves the coins to Robinhood without their purchase record.

What else should you check in your Robinhood crypto tax documents?

  • A basis change brings no corrected form

The 2025 basis on your copy is for your information only, so Robinhood issues no corrected form when it changes. Put the right basis on Form 8949 yourself. The IRS copy had proceeds only, so use box H for coins held a year or less and box K for longer.

  • Several sales can share one line

Robinhood combines each day’s sales of one coin with the same holding term into a single line on the 1099-DA. Each line also names the coin by its 9-character Digital Token Identifier, or 999999999 if it has none registered. Match your records to the form one day and one coin at a time.

  • Stablecoin sales can be left off

Robinhood reports qualifying stablecoin sales only once their combined proceeds pass $10,000, and then as one total per coin. Below that line, you still report every one of those sales.

  • The wash sale rule does not name crypto

Robinhood holds your stock and your crypto in one app, but the wash sale rule treats them differently. A loss on stock or other securities is disallowed if you buy substantially identical ones within 30 days before or after the sale. The statute does not expressly cover crypto, and the IRS has issued no guidance applying it there. As a House committee approved it, H.R. 10357 would extend the rule to traded crypto sold after September 14, 2026.

We file your Robinhood stock and crypto sales on one return.

For Robinhood investors, Valim’s CPAs work out the cost basis behind each crypto sale and prepare both the federal and state returns.

  • We reconcile the 1099-DA and 1099-B in your Robinhood PDF with your records before any sale reaches Form 8949.
  • For transferred coins that show no basis, we rebuild the cost from the records of the exchange or wallet that sent them.
  • We weigh taking a gain or loss before Robinhood’s December 31 cut-off against taking it in January.
  • We size your four estimated payments to your Robinhood gains.
  • Your fee covers our reply to any IRS or state notice on a return we prepared, whether or not it concerns a Robinhood sale.

Robinhood tax questions.

Do I have to pay taxes on Robinhood gains?

Yes, a realized gain on crypto or stock sold on Robinhood is taxed for the year you sell, with or without a form. The tax falls on the gain, which is your proceeds minus the cost basis you report. A gain on anything held a year or less is taxed at your ordinary rate, and a longer holding at the lower long-term rates. A crypto loss can offset a stock gain, and the reverse, since both are capital assets.

Which tax form does Robinhood send for crypto?

Robinhood puts your crypto sales on Form 1099-DA, a form that began with tax year 2025. It sits inside the consolidated 1099, next to Form 1099-B for stock and options sales. Before 2025, crypto sales went on the 1099-B too. For 2025, crypto rewards of $600 or more came on Form 1099-MISC. The IRS gets a copy of each form. From 2026, the 1099-DA must also report basis for covered digital assets.

When does Robinhood send tax documents?

Robinhood said its tax documents for 2025 would be ready by February 17, 2026, and it emails you when they are. February 17 was also the IRS deadline for a consolidated statement. For a Robinhood IRA, Form 1099-R came sooner, by February 2. Form 5498, which reports your IRA contributions, came later, by June 1. If you also trade on Coinbase, its 2025 Form 1099-DA had a later date, March 19, 2026.

How do I get my Robinhood tax documents?

To get Robinhood tax documents, tap Account (the person icon) in the app, then Menu (three bars), then Tax center. On the web, the Tax center is in Robinhood’s web classic view. A closed account keeps its forms there too. The document ID on the cover page of your consolidated 1099 lets tax software such as TurboTax import your forms. Robinhood’s CSV files of your transactions arrive after the consolidated 1099s. If you also trade on Crypto.com, its forms come by email as a download link instead.
